Luxury Holidays – Perfect in a credit crunch???

Friday, March 20th, 2009

I think it’s a huge irony that the credit crunch has presented us with the opportunity to live a life like a millionaire. Why?

Because luxury tour operators at the moment are really conscious of the credit crunch and have dropped the prices on some of the best hotels in the world. They are paranoid about filling their allocation this year and  I have seen luxury holidays discounted by over £5,500 per couple, which is simply amazing!

You can live like the rich and famous for a fraction of the price.

We have found that these holidays are being booked like never before. As I write this our sales are 48% up for the year with our average booking value having increased by almost 10% compared to the same period last year. Why is this?

Well I think if you are in a good job on a variable mortgage then you are likely to have more disposable income now than ever before. As long as your job is secure there is no reason for you not to be spending as usual?

In fact with with people earning so little in interest in savings accounts they might feel they might as well be spending it. Saving as much as 30% on a holiday could be a wise investment … not to mention fun!

To see what I mean visit luxury holidays or holiday deals.

Planning a trip to the Indian Ocean Isles?

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

The weather is slowly getting warmer in the UK but if you fancy a complete change then try jetting off to the Indian Ocean Islands. The choice of Maldives, Mauritius, Seychelles and Rodrigues may be difficult to choose from, but with as you hear more about each you are set to have picked one that you want to visit by the end of this year!

The Maldives are utterly breathtaking and have even been described as heaven on earth. The Maldives resorts are well known for their water villas and there are over a thousand small coral islands with beautiful white sandy beaches. Travel in style from the airport to your hotel in style, in a speedboat or a seaplane! Plenty of sea based activities will mean you can be as busy as you want to as there is always a great activity you can enjoy.

Mauritius is home to some of the most lavish hotels in the world. Mauritius is a tropical paradise with white sands, coral reefs, mountains and volcanic lakes. The geology has sheltered coves and shallow water lagoons, that give a great setting for a wonderful holiday.

A holiday in the Seychelles is one of the most exclusive destinations on the planet! There is fascinating wildlife to see like the giant tortoise and you can go on nature trails which go around the coast and further inland into the exotic forests.

Last but not least is the little island of Rodrigues. This is the most undeveloped of the four and is delightfully tranquil. A holiday here can be easily combined with a holiday in Mauritius giving you a taste of both islands. This island is ideal for nature enthusiasts who enjoy relaxing and the occasional bird watching or angling. This island is also perfect for hiking around where you will see fantastic plant species in an unspoilt beautiful island.

Does anyone have any preferences or are looking forward to jet setting to one of the destinations featured?

Honeymoon Packages – Or do it yourself?

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

I am often asked whether it’s best to buy a package holiday or to do it yourself. The theory goes that people who do it themselves can hunt down those cheap flights and best hotel deals without the need for a tour operator or a travel agent.

While the answer may not be clear cut for small, unimportant holidays you have to be very very careful when you are planning your honeymoon. I would suggest that a honeymoon package is essential for the following reasons:-

  • With a package holiday everything is handled by professionals. This way you are sure that you are going to the right place at the right time of year. The last thing you want on the first day of your honeymoon is to have an argument over whose fault the rain is!
  • Package holidays are usually protected by ABTA and ATOL licences. ABTA covers the advice you have been given by your travel agent and ATOL financially protects you should the airline or hotel go bust. When you book things yourself you rarely have this protection.
  • Honeymoon package holidays may actually be cheaper. Don’t forget that major tour operators have more purchasing power than you and will invariably get a better deal from a hotel than you can. The hotel can’t afford to give customers the same rates otherwise the tour operators will stop using them. The tour operators can pass some of this discount to you therefore making the holiday cheaper.
  • Package holidays have better “added extras”, especially as a honeymoon couple. Tour operators often have special offers such as upgrades for honeymoon couples. They know which hotels will upgrade you on arrival or greet you with a bottle of champagne. So if you like your perks they will be able to help. They want to create a good impression so that you come back time and time again. If you book direct with the hotel they know that you are unlikely to book with them again (not many people holiday year after year at the place where they went on honeymoon) and so they won’t be as inclined to upgrade you.

Do you agree? Are you thinking of booking your honeymoon yourself or going with a package? Let us know your thoughts

Duty free ‘still a big part of holidays’

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Some 65 per cent of holidaymakers set aside money in their budget to pick up tax-free items for themselves at airport duty-free shops when they travel, new research has indicated.

According to the figures, published by Direct Line Travel Insurance, traditional duty-free shops remain the most popular retail areas of airports, in spite of the “vast array” of shopping outlets now available in places such as Heathrow’s Terminal 5.

Chris Price, head of the travel insurer, said there are “hundreds of pounds to be saved” on a holiday if travellers are willing to shop around.

“For instance, by visiting countries outside of the eurozone and America, you may find that you can still get good value for your pound this summer,” he explained.

Mr Price added that early bird bookings and tax-free goodies at the airport are also good options for thrifty holidaymakers.

Perfume and aftershave were ranked as the favourite tax-free treat to pick up at the airport, while other popular items included sunglasses, cosmetics and other toiletries, cigarettes, cigars and alcohol.

However, a recent survey carried out by Tesco Money Card indicated that some 40 per cent of people returned from their holiday regretting their choice of souvenir.

The supermarket published a list of the ten “most regrettable” purchases made on holiday, including straw donkeys, mugs, novelty T-shirts, shot glasses and national costumes.

Dubai ‘has more than just glitz’

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

People planning a holiday to Dubai may be interested to move beyond the modern glamour of the city and explore its history as a trading port, an author has suggested.

According to Lara Dunston, author of DK Eyewitness Dubai, the city’s “rich heritage” is steeped in the Bedouin tradition of hospitality.

Historically, she said, “travellers of all kinds” have come to the city to trade their wares for several centuries.

She added that this tradition continues today – with English families, Australian backpackers and Russian holidaymakers among the many people who take a holiday in Dubai each year.

Ms Dunston added that the glitz and glamour of the city is “just one aspect” and there is much to do and see beyond the shops.

Dubai’s department of tourism and commerce marketing claimed last month that the country hosts an estimated 700,000 tourists from Ireland and the UK each year.

Former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell spent time in the city during the festive season last year with her daughter, Bluebell.

Previous figures published last spring suggested that 6.95 million people from around the world stayed in hotels in Dubai during their visit to the city.

August, November, December, February and March were named as the five most popular months to take a holiday in Dubai.

Sunshine and good value among Brits’ holiday must-haves

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Price is often the biggest determining factor when it comes to choosing where to take a holiday, according to a new survey of British travel trends.

A poll of 2,000 people carried out on behalf of American Express Insurance Services indicated that price was the most important consideration for one in six Brits looking for a break abroad, while currency exchange rates and warm temperatures were also named as important factors.

The survey also found that more UK-based travellers are looking to spend holiday time outside of the eurozone, as they think they may find more value for their money by going abroad.

However, people should not cut costs to the point where they neglect to purchase travel insurance, according to Chris Rolland, head of the insurance firm.

Those on a budget who are looking for a warm getaway to South Africa may wish to heed the advice of the country’s tourism board, which recently published an article in the Daily Mail.

According to the group, the country’s ‘secret season’ – which is the period between May and August – is a good time to save on accommodation, as prices can be reduced by up to 30 per cent.

Relax at the spa in Mauritius

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

Travellers enjoying a luxury holiday in Mauritius may wish to take a break from soaking up the sun to enjoy a new spa at the Four Seasons resort, according to a writer for the Times.

Nick Wyke said the facility is “a model spa with everything just as it should be” and added that it has a “cool, contemporary feel”.

Honeymooners, he wrote, might be particularly keen to make sure of the private over-water spa treatment pavilions onsite or enjoy a freshly-prepared spa meal served “by super-attentive staff”.

For who would prefer to spend their afternoons out on the links, the spa facility is open until 22:00 local time and offers a golfer’s restorative massage for people keen on unwinding after a day on the Ernie Els-designed course.

The Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita is located east of Madagascar.

According to the hotel, the island is said to have inspired heaven and treatments at the spa have been developed using the surrounding region as inspiration.

Salon services – including makeup application, facial treatments, manicures, pedicures and hairstyling – are also available at the facility.
