Will the BP oil spill effect Florida Keys travellers?

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, the U.S. Coast Guard and Monroe County Emergency Management are continuing to monitor developments at the BP Deepwater explosion and subsequent oil leaks in the northern Gulf of Mexico.

It looks like currently the Florida Keys are unaffected by the oil spill at the moment and is forecast to remain the case for the forseable future. There have been reports of some oil arriving on beaches but these have been found to be unconnected with the BP oil spill.

Oceanogrpahers say if the Gulf of Mexico current loops change adversely it would 10-14 days to arrive at the Florida Keys in a worse case scenario.

Accordingly no advisories are recommending against travel to the Florida Keys. There are also no other precautions advising not to engage in fishing, diving, swimming or other water sports in or around the Keys. Finally, the Florida Keys-waters seafood is being delcared as safe to eat.

How does the Greece debt crisis effect UK holidaymakers?

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Despite EU leaders agreeing a deal to help bail out the Greek Government’s debt crisis this may just be the start of problems for the Euro. Other economies such as Spain, Portugal and Italy are saddled with massive debts are likely to have to enact strict austerity measures in order to contain the situation.

If the Euro does come under pressure what does that mean for UK travellers?

Most travellers would think that it is going to help as they travel to Europe their spending money will go further as the Euro weakens against the pound.

However because the UK is so dependent on trading with Europe the pound has also been hit which has meant both the Euro and the Pound have both slipped against the dollar. This means that travellers from the UK to the USA are going to find it very expensive.

As the pound weakens it is only a matter of time before UK tour operators are going to have to put up prices as the majority of their contracts are in dollars or the domestic currency where the hotel is based.

Our advice therefore for UK travellers is to book early with operators before they have to put up their prices. If you book early then hopefully by the time you travel the pound will have rallied and your spending money will go further. Also by booking early it gives you longer to watch the currency markets and to buy your foreign currency as soon as the pound reaches a reasonable level.

Personally, I use a windows desktop application that gives me currency rates every day and when they hit a certain level I buy my currency. Ok the amounts I buy aren’t going to set the markets racing but as they say every little helps!

Updated advice for people with Thailand Holidays booked

Monday, May 31st, 2010

The Foreign Office has just amended its advice regarding travel to Thailand.

The advice previously was not to travel unless it was essential. The latest advice is now to exercise caution if travelling to Bangkok or Chiang Mai but non essential travel can take place.

Political stability continues to be a problem in Thailand (Bangkok in particular). There is still a risk of violence and further demonstrations but as at 29th May 2010 life in both cities has generally returned to normal.

There was a curfew in place in Bangkok and 23 other provinces which has now been lifted.

Travellers who are just transitting through Bangkok airport are at least risk as the airport managed to escape much of the disruption that occured. If you are travelling away from the airport then you are advised to exercise caution and avoid demonstrations and large gatherings. Advice still remains to avoid travel to the Preah Vihear temple area and also to the far southern provinces of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and Songkhla.

Is Eruption of Eyjafjallajökull Volcano over?

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Finally the volcano ash could be on its way after causing travel chaos over the past 2 months, British Meteorological office state that clear skies will be seen all week and that there is no ash cloud currently over Europe.

According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office the  Eyjafjallajökull Volcano appears dormant, however this can only be confirmed after 3 months of no further eruptions…experts are stating that this could be a ‘pause’ and the volcano ash may continue to erupt for the near future.

The fearce volcano also has a volcanic sister ‘Katla’ who after the last 3 Eyjafjallajökull eruptions has followed suit and is said to be much angrier which could therefore cause further problems for the travel industry.

The ban over the last couple of months has been called a ‘European Embarrasment’ by Giovanni Bisignani, director-general of International Air Transport Association due to the lack of organisation and the over cautious bans the air space closure has now caused.

Lets hope its the end of the Eyjafjallajokull’s fight, so that the flights can return to normal…however there is the worry that the sister ‘Katla’ will now awake!

BA ‘Keep the flag flying’

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Top airline British Airlines have released a fleet of air crafts with the message ‘keeping the flag flying’ on as the airline continues to run a reduced flight schedule during the cabin crew strike.

Despite 473 members of cabin crewe on strike, the airline has been assuring its customers that it is still operating, according to BA Chief Executive Willie Walsh ”Our operations have been strong and the number of crew reporting for duty means we are flying our expected contingency schedule. The sun also reported he stated that “I would like to thank staff for their efforts which are making a real difference to our customers,” he said.

The bold message has been painted onto 10 planes at Heathrow and 2 at Gatwick, flying over the area were the staff are holding the picket line, giving the message that the airline will continue to fly even without the desired staff. In fact BA operated 60% of long haul flights and 60% of short haul flights yesterday and to further defy the strike they printed a full page advert in the Financial Times stating the many destinations they had still managed to fly to!

The strike is now into its 9th day with the airline losing £7m per day, not to mention the lost business from potential customers who will no doubt book through their competitors to avoid the strike.

In order to resolve the strike and stop losing ridiculous amounts of money per day, Wilie Walsh needs to now work with the crew members to settle the disagreement before it gets out of control.

Keep that flag flying BA!

Looking for a slick holiday?

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Looking for a cheap holiday to Cuba, Mexico or Florida? You may be in luck due to the massive oil spillage which has taken place threatening the tourism industry for the area.

With experts saying the spill could be the worst in history, which happened due to an explosion and fire of a Deepwater drilling rig 50 miles of the coast which is leased by oil giants BP. The spillage covers 4,700 square miles and is still continuing to spread due to the wind blowing the slick to just three miles away from the Mississippi river. This could therefore effect neighbouring states such as Louisiana, Mississippi,Alabama and Florida.

If the oil affects these states the coastlines, beaches, wildlife then these resorts may be affected however for the meantime booking to go to Cancun, the west coast of Florida and Cuba should be fine and unaffected. It also means that you may get a better deal as travel companies may be forced to cut prices to drive travellers to the area.
