Hold on to your hat, it’s time for another “Travel Unravelled” blog post from one of our travel experts. This time Nichola Luke tells us her travel tales – from £104,000 holidays to Mardi Gras masks – read the full rundown here:

Bio – I’ve always wanted to work in travel since the age of 13. I qualified and then went and ran a pizza business instead. I finally went back to my roots 20 years ago and have been with Holidaysplease nearly 8 years.

Questions:

Best ever holiday and why: I did Australia in 8 days – I got to travel business class and wasn’t aware that we were going to get upgraded.  I had taken a sleeping tablet so slept like a baby all the way, which meant I didn’t actually get the benefits! We did a whirlwind tour of Australia from Sydney to the Gold Coast to the Rain Forest and Hamilton Island. We were at the Palazzo Versace Hotel the day after the final show of I’m A Celebrity – damn we were so close to Ant and Dec!

Top travel tip: Take Vitamin B two months before tropical holidays – it stops the mosquitoes nibbling you.

Dream holiday and why: This is a hard question as there are so many places I’d still like to visit but I’m going to go with New Orleans for Mardi Gras – I collect Masks, so it would be great to see all those. I’m also quite interested in Witch Craft and there’s a lot of Anne Rice books based here!

Something you don’t get on the plane without: I never get on the plane without my own shawl/blanket – so it smells nice. I always take my kindle too.

Best experience of customer service on holiday: Capella St Lucia – The butler was awesome! He got my preferred drinks ready for me by the pool at the time I said I was going to be there – wow wee!

Worst experience of customer service on holiday:  With Airtours. I went to Zante at the end of October once and the resort had a mini storm which had destroyed the apartment we were in. The door was hanging off and it was complete chaos. We were the only people staying there and they just left us stranded.

Most embarrassing moment on holiday:  There are too many to say!  I’m famous for falling down and twisting my ankle… let’s just leave it at that!

Favourite world cuisine: Chinese

Funniest moment on holiday: On a girls holiday to Crete many years ago we met these lads at the airport and got chatting as you do. We didn’t say where we were going, but ended up on the same coach. We were dropped off first at our apartment…but we soon realised we’d picked up a suitcase that wasn’t ours.  About 40 minutes later, the rep comes back with the lads and it turned out my friend had the same case as one of the guys! Through the holiday, we bumped into them constantly – even when collecting the car at Manchester! What sticks to mind most though is that one of their names was Knobby! Ha ha!

Worst holiday and why: Zante – bad service, bad weather and mosquitoes.

Strangest request from a customer: A surprise wedding for the bride. He’d bought the wedding dress, booked the date and also had her best friend come as a surprise.

Most expensive holiday booked or holiday you were most jealous of that you booked: Most expensive holiday was to the Residence in Mauritius for a family – £104,000!

What’s the most over-the-top customer service you have heard of in travel? When I worked for Amex, the centurion clients visiting Harrods would have their dogs walked outside.

And finally, the thing you love most about travel: That every client is different and our holidays are unique to them not me.
