Yesterday saw Chancellor George Osbourne bring some good news for the travel industry in this year’s budget. It was announced that Air Passenger Duty (APD) will not be increasing this year. Osbourne told how he will be delaying the increase until next year due to the heavy rises in tax last year.

It was also confirmed that talks will be starting today regarding the system of distance banding used for the tax. These talks will review the “rather arbitrary nature of the banding system which appears to consider the Caribbean to be further away than parts of the US and Hawaii,” he commented.

APD will now be extended to private jets too so that APD taxation does not have to be increased. He said “the wealthiest should not escape the tax the ordinary holidaymaker has to pay.” The hefty rise in last year’s duty and the increasing cost pressures on families was the reason behind the delay in the APD rise.

Osbourne further added that he wanted to replace APD with a per plane duty. However current international laws permit this, and so the UK government will now be working to change this law.

The Economic Times of India reports that more couples are shunning decadent luxury on the most romantic holiday of their life, opting instead for eco-tourism and beach huts.

Seema Sabharwal, a honeymoon planner, told the newspaper: “Many [couples] are really trying to make responsible choices as they begin their lives together.”

Further evidence that the environment is becoming an important consideration for many people can be found in a recent survey by Brides magazine, which showed that 60 per cent of respondents thought it was important to be green when planning a wedding.

Anyone planning a honeymoon will be able to find a wide range of eco-tourism opportunities around the world, with notable examples in Thailand.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Swiss Air had predicted we will all be taking honeymoons in space within 100 years, thanks to advances in technology.

Scientists on a routine dive in the Seychelles have discovered a previously unknown reef close to the archipelago.

Dr Dave Smith and Dr Dave Suggett from the University of Essex were carrying out a scuba dive off Curieuse Island when they came across the discovery.

It had previously been thought that there were not any coral reefs in the Seychelles, although the destination has always been popular for holidays due to its marine life, which includes over 200 giant tortoises.

“Diving revealed an extensive coral reef to the south of the island, at a depth which would not be visible to the occasional snorkeler,” said Dr Smith.

The researchers also found evidence that the coral had begun to recover from the effects of the tsunami in 2004.

For anyone who wants to book Seychelles holidays to explore the new reef, Seychelles Travel recommends October and November as among the best months for snorkelling and diving.

It says that the water is nice and warm and that visibility is often greater than 30 metres.
