Cutting costs in the Caribbean

Although the Caribbean is undoubtedly a luxury holiday destination, this does not mean that people hoping to go there cannot cut a few pounds off their trip, one travel writer has said.

Fred Mawer, writing for the Telegraph, says that savvy travellers can easily save some cash by booking holidays at a certain time.

He recommends that people book packages now if they intend to travel before mid-December, since a number of special deals are likely to be available during the low season.

In addition, anyone intending to book just flights should do so now, as a number of operators including British Airways and Virgin are running promotions, Mr Mawer says.

The Caribbean does have an off-peak season, which runs from mid-December to late April, and is when the highest prices will be.

Opt for a pre-Christmas break instead, which will save money while still allowing holidaymakers to benefit from great weather, the expert suggests.

Association of British Travel Agents spokesperson Sean Tipton recently said that he believes travellers will increasingly try to cut costs rather than not have holidays at all.

Earlier in 2008, Tom Hall, editor of the Lonely Planet books, said that holidaymakers are likely to get the best value if they head out to mid or long haul destinations, outside the eurozone.
