Why not head on golf holidays to the Dominican Republic?

Anyone keen on a relaxing round of golf could consider trying it in a new destination – the Dominican Republic.

The Caribbean location has recently been named as Golf Destination of the Year for its region – which also includes Latin America – by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators, it has emerged.

Francisco Javier Garcia, minister of tourism for the country, said the sport has boomed in the Dominican Republic in recent years.

“We will certainly use this award to continue working not only to be the number one golf destination for Latin America and the Caribbean, but to be the number one golf destination in the world,” he added.

It is thought that the Dominican Republic won the accolade as a result of its beautifully-located courses, with greens adjacent to the beach and spectacular cliff faces.

Last month, holidays to the Caribbean were also recommended by the Toronto Star.

It said that the luxury hotels, the family-friendly atmosphere and the great food available make it the ideal location for a luxury trip.
