Brits beat January blues with holiday bookings

Although the weather outside may be dreary, dark and unwelcoming, it seems many Britons already have sun, sea and sand on their minds.

According to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta), six million people in the UK will have booked their summer holidays by the end of this month, no doubt keen to have something to look forward to as the economic gloom continues and the dark nights drag on.

In fact, such is our eagerness to get away that we are booking some 200,000 holidays a day, with many airlines and hotels offering large discounts in order to encourage customers to book with them.

An Abta spokesperson commented: “The last thing people give up is their holiday and there are some extraordinary deals out there at the moment. January is a big month and with all these offers it looks like being a busy month.”

Internet media company Travelzoo recently found that Britons are among the most prepared people in Europe when it comes to making early holiday bookings at an average of three months prior to travel – and today’s news seems to be proving it.

Long-haul destinations such as Thailand, South Africa and even Vietnam are proving popular thanks again to relatively low airfares and the fact that their currencies are favourable against the pound.
