Indonesian Tsunami…

There has been more devastation today as a Tsunami hit western Indonesia.

A 7.7 magnitude earth quake struck late Monday night off Sumatra Island’s coast. This then caused waves as high as 10ft in the Mentawai islands, west of the island of Sumatra, sweeping out 10 villages. The area is also a popular surfing destination.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity, cause by the pacific ring of fire. A warning was issued yesterday after the earthquake struck. The wave swept away 80% of buildings leaving hundreds missing, including a group of Australian surfers. However those missing may have fled to higher ground. The damage and bad weather are delaying efforts of refuge to reach the affected areas. Heavy rain is preventing helicopters from accessing the area; boats will also struggle to reach the island as the dock has been destroyed.
