El Colacho! The Baby Jumping Festival…Yes You Read That Right!

Today hosts one of the most bizarre festivals Spain has to offer, ‘El Colacho’ also known as the Baby Jumping festival which takes place every year in June in the village of Castrillo de Murcia, Spain.

Spain is home to a whole host of fun and unique fiestas. You are sure to find a festival of some kind in every town and village. Each one is sure to get all the townsfolk out on the street celebrating.

From pelting each other with tomatoes to letting angry bulls loose in the streets, the country tends to come on top when it comes to bizarre celebrations, but the Baby Jumping festival is by far the most outrageous!

It does exactly what is says on the tin, numerous babies born within the past year are placed on the ground, whilst grown up men dressed as devils jump over these blissfully unaware infants.

The idea of men hurdling over their baby is enough to frighten any mother, however it is believed to purify the souls of these babies and protect them from future sins. We hope it also offers protection against middle-aged hurdlers if they trip and fall on them, luckily no babies are believed to be harmed during these proceedings.

The famously bizarre festival first began in 1620, and has since continued to be an annual tradition of Spain. It is part of the celebrations for the Catholic festival of Corpus Christi, which is the celebration of the body and blood of Jesus.

Taking a leap of faith…the Spanish sure know how to rock a crazy festival!
