Kauai – The Island Of Discovery

Our travel expert Kevin Partridge has blog control, and he’s shared with me his personal experience of Kauai. Kevin spoke passionately about this stunning Hawaiian island, and in his words “Kauai is the perfect getaway – think stunning scenery, pristine white sands, and lots of adventure. Having worked in the travel industry for 16 years, Kauai is without doubt one of my favourite destinations’’.

When someone has been to multiple destinations, and working in travel for 16 years it’s worth taking notice. If you’re considering Hawaii then it’s time to take Kevin’s advice, and start thinking about Kauai.

Also known as the ‘Garden Isle’ or ‘Island of discovery’ Kauai is the oldest and northernmost of the Hawaiian Islands. The first thing that normally springs to mind when you think of Hawaiian holidays is Waikiki beach, or Pearl Harbour, but if you want to escape from the hustle and bustle and experience true Hawaii then look no further than Kauai.

The first thing you will notice is that there are no high rise hotels in sight. No multi lane freeways, just a relaxed island pace.

As well as beautiful beaches and a warm Hawaiian welcome Kauai has so much to offer. One must see attraction is Waimea Canyon, nicknamed “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”. Best viewed from air there are many helicopter trips, which will take you in to the heart of the canyon passing cascading waterfalls and tropical forest canopies. You finish your exhilarating flight by heading over one of Kauai’s other highlights ‘The Napali Coast’.

The Napali Coast is a 15 mile stretch of coastline where dramatic mountains meet the sea and is only accessible by air, boat, or foot. Guided kayak tours are a popular way to view the coastline, whilst the more adventurous might like to take on the Kalalau Trail, an 11 mile trek which crosses 5 valleys with a night of camping on the beach at the end.

If you are not felling quite that adventurous then there are an abundance of other attractions including Spouting horn, a natural lava tube, which releases a spout of water 60 feet in to the air, or Hanalei Bay made famous as part of the set of the musical ‘South Pacific’.

No visit would be complete without a trip to the Kilohana Plantation, where you can take a ride on the plantation railway, hike through the rainforest or experience a traditional Hawaiian Lu’au.

Kevin picked out Grand Hyatt Kauai and Kauai Beach Resort as two excellent bases to explore ‘the garden isle’. If you want to discuss anything with him then he’d be delighted to speak with you.
