Top things to do during the May bank holidays

With lots of events on offer during the May Bank Holidays it’s sometimes difficult to select something to do. We’ve made things easier by selecting some of the top activities and events from around the UK…

Annual Cheese Rolling Festival, Gloucestershire.  Monday 30th May

This annual event takes place on Cooper’s Hill in Brockworth and involves competitors chasing a giant wheel of cheese down the steep hill. Want to take part? No application is required and competitors can turn up on the day (but don’t expect your jeans to be in a wearable state afterwards!). The first person to reach the finish line will receive the 8lb block of Double Gloucester as a prize.

Canalway Cavalcade, Little Venice, London.  Saturday 30th April – Monday 2nd May

The waterways of London’s Little Venice become filled with canal boats as the Inland Waterways Association host their annual event. 130 boats are moored along the Grand Union Canal with many house boats decorated for the pageant.  Enjoy performing morris dancers, live music, trade stalls, children’s activities, refreshments and real ale tent.

May Day Celebrations, Ironbridge, Shropshire. Sunday 1st May

Celebrate May Day the Victorian way at Blist Hill in Ironbridge.  The May Queen leads a traditional May Day Parade through the centre of the town accompanied with maypole dancing, feasting and games. Other activities include candle dipping, a lesson in the school house and sing-a-longs. Whilst in the area a trip to the Iron Bridge is a must.

Leeds Indie Food Festival, Leeds. Thursday 12th May- Monday 30th May

A celebration of local food and drink with a variety of events available across the city. Learn about the Victorian dinner table at Leeds Central Library and enjoy a pizza takeover by Tapped Leeds complete with veggie and gluten free options.  Purchase a festival passport for discounts, deals, special goodies and prizes.

English Civil War re-enactment, Elvaston Castle Country Park. Saturday 30th April- Monday 2nd May

Enjoy the drama of the English Civil War re-enactment at Elvaston Castle with the Earl of Manchester’s Regiment of Foote. Enjoy a grand march by them through the estate followed by a display of arms. There is also a Living History Camp which provides great insight into this fascinating period in British history.

Gin Stock, Cardiff. Saturday 30th April- Sunday 1st May

Celebrate all things gin at Gin Stock. Some of the finest gin producers will be present with more than 50 types of gin on offer. Pick up tasting tips and learn about the history and heritage of their distillations. Street food traders are on standby with delicious cuisine for when you need to refuel.

Star Wars Day, Legoland, Windsor. Saturday 30th April- Monday 2nd May

A fantastic day out for Star Wars fans. Take part in a variety of Star Wars themed activities and put your Lego skills to the test with Star Wars themed building workshops. This is also a chance to see one of the biggest Lego Star Wars models ever built. The Death Star is a staggering 2.4 metres wide, 3 metres high and weighs an impressive 860kg.

Hays Festival

This year’s Hay Festival is packed full of family focused events including book readings, science talks and illustration workshops. To celebrate the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death there will be a variety of Shakespeare talks and commemorative celebrations. Other events include a concert to mark the 100th birthday of well-loved children’s writer Roald Dahl.
