Family Holidays- Heaven or Hell?

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010
A family holiday should be a fun, relaxing and stress-free time for everyone in the family. Or is it? According to Teletext Holidays, a study of 2,000 mums revealed that going on holiday with the children is even more stressful than a 9-5 job. One in four mums said how packing, travelling and keeping the kids busy is more hard work than actually working. Four in ten mums fear taking a holiday break and avoid going abroad due to all the worry and trouble it causes. A further 36% complained how a lack of help from their partners also causes friction and rows with 80% of mums needing another holiday when they return.
As a result, the poll found that half of the mums surveyed will only book a holiday at a place which offers a kids club, on-site entertainment and a maid service in order to make the holiday as relaxing as possible. Having said this, 52% said how they still end up having to wash dishes, 43% end up cooking and 73% even admitted to cleaning up their hotel room before the maid came so that they don’t come across as messy. These figures highlight how important choosing the right holiday is for all members of the family. Travelling with children can be a burden but choosing an all-inclusive family-friendly resort offering kids clubs, babysitters and maid services can help ease the strain, leaving you to switch-off and enjoy the holiday you deserve. So why not let us help you find the perfect family-friendly resorts wherever you wish to go for your next family holiday. Remember the baggage rules, travellers warned

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Anyone about to leave the UK in order to go on a well-earned holiday has been reminded that the normal regulations apply when it comes to baggage restrictions on aircraft.

Security spokesperson for Gatwick Airport, Fiona Carleton, said that with December 27th and 28th looking set to be especially busy days in terms of flights in and out, people should remember that ignoring the rules is likely to cause delays.

She warned: “Restrictions apply to all liquids – including Christmas presents – and I strongly encourage passengers to come prepared so that our operational staff can provide the best possible service to all.”

Liquids are still restricted to containers of 100ml or less and anyone taking presents to friends and family members in their hand luggage is advised not to wrap them, as they may need to be checked at security.

Better still, put them in your suitcase where they can be wrapped and ready to be given to the eager recipient at the other end!

In related news, those going abroad have been urged not to forget to tell their bank.

This is the advice of Peter Harrison from moneysupermarket.com, who said that one person in nine has had transactions that they tried to make abroad refused by their bank.

Going anywhere nice this year?

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

A whopping three million Brits are to take to the skies over the Christmas period in order to go on holiday, it has been found.

According to the Association of British Travel agents (Abta), traditional holiday destinations such as Tenerife, Turkey and Egypt are popular, but other, less touristy places like Budapest and Warsaw are also being chosen by many people from the UK.

This could be due to people visiting their family and friends who may have moved away.

The number jetting off to foreign climes was found to be much the same as last year, despite predictions that travel may suffer as people cut back amid the credit crunch.

Justin Fleming, Abta president, said that getting away is more important at Christmas for many than is escaping in the summer, since the reasoning behind it is probably different.

“[Holidays] provide a valuable time to unwind and spend quality time with family,” he pointed out.

The news echoes recent research by Kayak.co.uk, which found that most people who are going away over the festive period will do so on December 22nd when they have finished work for the year and have had time to tie up any loose ends.

It’s time for Camel Idol on Dubai holidays…

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

With X Factor over for another year, it’s hard to think of something which could fill the gap left by Diana and … that one who cried all the time.

However, for those lucky enough to be going on holidays to Dubai this week, it won’t be a problem at all.

This is because something very special – if not a little strange – is taking place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from December 23rd: the Camel Festival.

Although it may be similar in terms of the amount of fluttering long eyelashes and knobbly knees on show, the Camel Festival is likely to be much more exciting and probably less predictable.

According to the Khaleej Times, the competition will see over 30,000 camels compete in a huge beauty contest lasting 13 days.

No, we’re not sure how they can make it last that long, either – or whether celebrities will join the competitors for a duet in the grand final – but Ebrahim Al Mazrouei, the organiser of the festival, said that there is plenty of interest.

“Every day we are registering around 600 to 700 camels and we have to extend the registration deadline by one more day, in order to cope with all the arrivals,” he commented.

The Gulf Today states that there are around 375,000 camels in the UAE – presumably the other 345,000 were too shy to take part.

Take a New York holiday, see the world’s biggest disco ball

Friday, December 19th, 2008

Holidays to New York for new year this time around could be bigger and better than ever before, thanks to efforts from the city’s tourist officials.

Although a huge ball counts the seconds down every New Year’s Eve, the usual one has been replaced with a whopper.

It’s 12 feet high, weighs double that of its predecessor and is studded with 2,668 Waterford crystals, meaning that the countdown should be bigger and sparklier than ever before.

George Fertitta, chief executive of New York City’s marketing and tourism organisation, said: “This year’s new ball reflects the vibrancy and excitement of New York City itself.”

He added that there will also be a host of activities going on to encourage visitors that NYC is the only place to celebrate new year.

Indeed, tourists will be able to see special operas and a New Year’s Eve performance of the Big Apple Circus, which is sure to delight families with young children who may not be able to keep those eyes open all the way to midnight!

For extra activities, people on holiday in New York may also wish to take a horse and carriage ride around Central Park or a helicopter ride to the top of the Statue of Liberty.

Get wet and wild on Caribbean holidays

Friday, December 19th, 2008

Waterbabies may wish to choose holidays in the Caribbean this year following the opening of a new water park on the island of Aruba.

Morgan’s Island is the biggest park of its kind in the Caribbean and only opened to the public on December 5th.

However, it looks set to become really popular thanks to a whole host of (terrifying sounding) rides that offer thrill seekers plenty to write home about.

For instance, Dragon Revenge incorporates what the island’s tourist board describes as “heart-stopping” waterslides, as well as toboggan rides – in water, we assume, not snow.

And coming soon is Buccaneer Tower, which will drop those brave enough to venture on it 21 feet vertically, making it the tallest free-fall waterslide in the world.

Just make sure you’ve got your bikini securely fastened for that one…

When you’ve recovered after such hair-raising rides (and recovered your keys from the bottom of the pool), there’s also the Black Pearl restaurant to replenish your energy levels.

In October, a spokesperson for the Association of Independent Tour Operators said that the Caribbean is a popular destination for Brits heading abroad at Christmas because it is warm, but celebrates in much the same way as we do.

Take in a summer concert in South Africa

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

People going on holidays to South Africa from late December until early April may be lucky enough to catch a performance as part of the Kirstenbosch Summer Concerts.

The mammoth event will incorporate dozens of acts from all over the world, including a special New Year’s Eve performance by popular electronica act Goldfish.

Located within the botanical gardens, Kirstenbosch is approximately eight miles south of Cape Town, making it a great idea for a day trip for people holidaying in the city.

Concerts will run every Sunday, but are very popular, so anyone hoping to go should get there early, uncoverthecape.co.za suggests.

“The Kirstenbosch Concerts have a special feel to them mainly due to the breathtaking setting. Part of the charm also lies in the warm, friendly and relaxed atmosphere,” the site adds.

RTE Money recently suggested that our winter could be an ideal time to take holidays to South Africa, because this coincides with their summer and it will be in festival and party mood.

In addition, there is no jet lag to contend with, as the country is in the same time zone as Britain.

Next Monday could be busy for holidays

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

What do you plan to do next Monday (December 22nd)? Deliver Christmas cards, shop for Brussels sprouts – or get away from it all?

According to a poll carried out by Kayak.co.uk, this is exactly what 43 per cent of Brits plan to do in a bid to either escape from the chaos that is a modern Christmas, or to embrace it by jetting off to see friends and family.

Some 63 per cent of those leaving plan to do so next Monday, thanks to many companies having broken up for the Christmas break.

Although 41.7 per cent were indeed travelling to stay with loved ones, 28 per cent said they were leaving with their partner in order to enjoy a romantic break.

The most popular destinations for such escapees were found to be New York (no doubt for shopping in the sales), the Caribbean and the Alps (for those in search of a true winter wonderland).

Meanwhile, in related news, people going overseas have been urged not to forget to inform their bank.

This is the advice of Peter Harrison from price comparison site moneysupermarket.com, who said that one person in nine had transactions that they tried to make abroad refused by their bank.

Party time for Thailand…

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

People going on their holidays to Thailand over the new year period had better pack even more party clothes and might want to start catching up on their sleep now.

This is because the Bank of Thailand has declared an extra day’s holiday for January 2nd, meaning that there will be five days’ consecutive holiday this time around and that the celebrations may be better than ever.

“Normally the Bank of Thailand will not set more than four consecutive holidays. To fix Friday January 2nd as a bank holiday will not significantly affect the country’s productivity and it will boost the tourism sector,” said the Bank of Thailand in a statement.

Although the country’s official new year begins in April, Thialand.com attests that its people celebrate along with the rest of the world on January 1st due to the diversity of the people there and the fact that there are always visitors from various countries passing through.

Hotels in Bangkok put up fairy lights and most hotels and bars run special promotions in celebration of the forthcoming new year.

The website suggests that the best places to watch the firework displays that occur are at Sanam Luang and Wat Saket, on top of the Golden Mount.

South Africa ‘a great December escape’

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

Anyone who feels slightly sick at the prospect of having to spend yet another Christmas eating Brussels sprouts and playing charades with elderly family members may be interested in a report on one website which suggests a place to get away from it all.

RTE Money comments that the first couple of weeks in December are ideal for taking holidays to South Africa to get some of its summer sunshine as opposed to the frostbite you may be vulnerable to in Britain.

“South Africa is buzzing in December, with the whole country on summer holidays,” the site points out.

Not only this, but the fact that South Africa is in the same time zone as us, which means that you won’t get jet lag and that you have more time to look around and explore what it has to offer.

The rand is currently good value against the pound, so anyone buying currency for their South African holidays will get more for their money.

A recent study carried out by Kayak.co.uk found that a whopping 60 per cent of people hope to escape from this year’s festive season, mostly to get away from the commercialisation seen during December.

However, others simply wanted to avoid their in-laws…
