My ideal visit to Mauritius

Friday, August 20th, 2010

So I have never been lucky enough to visit this beautiful island, with tiffany blue Ocean and white sand beaches, offering a mix of activities, diverse culture and outstanding beaches and resorts. I started to think about what I could do if I were to visit…

You can get direct flight from Heathrow with British Airways or Mauritius airline, and takes 12 hours. When I arrive I would check in to my luxury hotel (for arguments sake let’s just say I arrive at mid day) ditch my bags, and head straight to the beach, feeling a tad jet lagged I would lay in the sun watching the clear turquoise sea crash against the reef that rings the island, until the sun sets. I imagine that to be quite phenomenal!  Ids then put on my glad rags and go for a romantic dinner in the hotels luxury restaurant.

After a good night’s rest I would be ready for some adventure, I think id enjoy swimming with wild dolphins this can be done in the Tamarin on the west coast. Here you can also take surf lessons. The best places for diving however are Aux Bitches, Peyeybere and Grand Baie. Other water activities that Mauritius offers are Glass bottom boat trips, big game fishing, kite surfing and water skiing. I personally would love to have ago at all of these but maybe not all in the same day!

On my second day I think I might fancy visiting destinations on the island beyond the resort. I would like to visit the multi cultural capital Port Louis which offers street sellers and shops and vibrant markets. Id visit Mauritius’s natural history museum, and Champ de Mars, which is one of the oldest race courses in the southern hemisphere. I would then head to the small village of Triolet for some history the small town is home to the biggest Hindu temple on the island.

I would also like to visit the black Gorges National Park; this is located in the west part of Mauritius. There is a vast amount of wild life to be seen, including 1500 birds of over 150 species, giant turtles and mammals such as lions and monkeys.

Basically there is a lot you can see and do in Mauritius, it is a versatile destination and will suit most people’s preferences.

Family Holidays- Heaven or Hell?

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010
A family holiday should be a fun, relaxing and stress-free time for everyone in the family. Or is it? According to Teletext Holidays, a study of 2,000 mums revealed that going on holiday with the children is even more stressful than a 9-5 job. One in four mums said how packing, travelling and keeping the kids busy is more hard work than actually working. Four in ten mums fear taking a holiday break and avoid going abroad due to all the worry and trouble it causes. A further 36% complained how a lack of help from their partners also causes friction and rows with 80% of mums needing another holiday when they return.
As a result, the poll found that half of the mums surveyed will only book a holiday at a place which offers a kids club, on-site entertainment and a maid service in order to make the holiday as relaxing as possible. Having said this, 52% said how they still end up having to wash dishes, 43% end up cooking and 73% even admitted to cleaning up their hotel room before the maid came so that they don’t come across as messy. These figures highlight how important choosing the right holiday is for all members of the family. Travelling with children can be a burden but choosing an all-inclusive family-friendly resort offering kids clubs, babysitters and maid services can help ease the strain, leaving you to switch-off and enjoy the holiday you deserve. So why not let us help you find the perfect family-friendly resorts wherever you wish to go for your next family holiday. Our friendly dedicated travel experts will be delighted to assist in making your next family holiday as stress-free as possible.

Mauritius ‘is a beautiful island’

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Mauritius has been highly recommended by one travel writer to Britons who may have previously been undecided about going there.

Tim Jepson, writing for the Telegraph, called it “a beautiful island with plenty to offer” and said that its turquoise seas, scenic beaches and spectacular mountains are sure to delight Britons who need some sunshine after what has been a long winter.

He said that even as he flew into Mauritius’s airport, he could see that it had a charming, relaxed appearance – and it did not disappoint when he had actually landed.

“Balmy, tropical air [drifted] through the car’s open windows as we [passed] through neat, flower-decked villages,” he lamented.

Mr Jepson said he particularly enjoyed his visit to the capital of Port Talbot, which he thought had an air of India about it.

Mauritius is only 40 miles long by 30 miles wide, but is very distinct culturally, with 22 languages and 90 religions.

According to Discover Mauritius, the temperature in its coastal areas is between 22 degrees C in winter and 34 degrees C in summer.

Western and northern regions are typically warmer and drier than the east and the south.

The currency is the Mauritian Rupee.

X Factor pair holiday on Mauritius

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

X Factor winner Alexandra Burke and fellow finalist Ruth Lorenzo have taken the opportunity to get a break from their touring schedule to take a holiday in Mauritius.

The pair, who became close friends in the shared house during the live shows, are now flatmates in London and were pictured earlier this week as they got ready to jet off from Heathrow Airport.

They have now been pictured again soaking up the sun at their destination and wearing a number of different bikinis as they laughed in the surf.

No doubt they are keen to have a rest and recharge their batteries before the X Factor tour which begins soon and which includes all acts which got through to the live finals last year.

Although Mauritius is indeed popular with the rich and famous, it is also a good destination for ordinary holidaymakers and is not as expensive as some may think.

Check out Holidaysplease.co.uk, where a week’s break on the Indian Ocean island can be booked for as little as £995.

Mauritius is renowned for its excellent year round climate, as well as its beautiful scenery, notably Pieter Both Mountain.

Holidaymakers ‘should definitely explore Mauritius’

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

Anyone going on holidays to Mauritius should ensure they take time out to explore the island, one source has said.

Claire Wrathall of the Financial Times said she went there last February and was surprised at the number of people who simply stayed by the pool at their hotel, missing out on all Mauritius has to offer outside.

She points out how the island acted as a muse for a number of famous writers including Mark Twain, Joseph Conrad and Charles Darwin, all of whom were inspired by its natural beauty.

“Certainly the abundance, the variety, the omnipresence of vibrant, vivid colour is striking,” Ms Wrathall states, adding that the sea is a beautiful turquoise colour that turns into indigo over the coral reefs.

However, Twain summed it up in a more poetic manner when he wrote: “Rugged clusters of crags and peaks, green to their summits … What there is of Mauritius is beautiful.”

Jasper Gerard, writing for the Telegraph, also recently wrote that he enjoyed his holidays in Mauritius, saying that he found it to be accommodating, beautiful and diverse.

According to Discover Mauritius, the temperature on the island is likely to be around 22 degrees C in winter.

Find a nice brew on Mauritius holidays

Friday, November 21st, 2008

While China may be the first country that springs to mind when you think of tea, perhaps Mauritius deserves a mention too.

Anyone who loves a good brew can take part in various tours on the island that celebrate its tea-growing heritage, based at the Movenpick spa resort.

The day-long Tea Route tour takes tourists on a tour of Mauritius, leading them through the history of the tea trade, as well as letting them see first-hand how the drink gets to our mugs at a traditional tea factory in Bois-Ceri.

In addition, there is a tea museum, where you can taste a variety of different types of the drink, perhaps choosing some as a treat for loved ones back home.

For those who aren’t such big fans of the drink, Mauritius is also home to some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, as well as the sacred lake, which is housed inside the crater of a thankfully extinct volcano.

Bel Ombre, which is located on the south-west coast of the island, is the resort where much of the tea-related activities take place.

Maurutius is part of the Mascarene Islands and has Reunion Island to its south-west and Rodrigues to the north-east.

It is also famous for being the only known home of the dodo, which is Portuguese for ‘simpleton’.

Green honeymoons ‘are the future’

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

As we become more aware of the effect our actions may be having on our global footprint, many people are changing their ways in a bid to live a more sustainable life.

And it seems this includes making greener plans when it comes to honeymoons too.

The Economic Times of India reports that more couples are shunning decadent luxury on the most romantic holiday of their life, opting instead for eco-tourism and beach huts.

Seema Sabharwal, a honeymoon planner, told the newspaper: “Many [couples] are really trying to make responsible choices as they begin their lives together.”

Further evidence that the environment is becoming an important consideration for many people can be found in a recent survey by Brides magazine, which showed that 60 per cent of respondents thought it was important to be green when planning a wedding.

Anyone planning a honeymoon will be able to find a wide range of eco-tourism opportunities around the world, with notable examples in Thailand.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Swiss Air had predicted we will all be taking honeymoons in space within 100 years, thanks to advances in technology.

In the meantime, Mauritius, the Seychelles and Kenya are popular choices for loved-up newlyweds.

Mauritius ‘just like heaven’

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

Anyone about to book their holidays in Mauritius is likely to be pleased with a recent review of the island by a travel writer, who likened it to paradise.

Jasper Gerard, writing for the Telegraph, said he recently headed out with his wife and young children in tow and found Mauritius to be accommodating, beautiful and diverse.

He said that the people are unfailingly polite, even though mostly everyone is of a different nationality to each other – but that they are all bound by a common love of English football.

Mr Gerard also remarked that the island offers a number of different things to see and do.

“Who cannot be captivated by a sign for a crocodile farm, or by a mongoose sauntering across the road? Or by the intrigue of place names such as Gris-Gris, voodoo for “sinister magic”?,” he asks.

The Gerard family participated in plenty of sunbathing, swimming and eating at their luxury hotel, while the children were also entertained at the kids’ club.

In short, he concluded, it was the perfect family holiday.

According to Discover Mauritius, the temperature on the island is likely to be around 22 degrees C in winter.
